FAQ #1: Why do your foster dogs go to rescues?

A: I commonly get asked “Why do your foster dogs go to rescues?” or “Your foster dog is going to a rescue? Why is it not the other way around?” Well, it does work that way with rescue organizations. However, we foster through the Fort Worth Animal Care and Control Center, which is our local city animal shelter. Our local animal shelter, like a lot of municipal shelters, is bursting at the seams with dogs, literally. In fact, FWACC is often over capacity, which leads to some dogs being euthanized due to lack of space.

To reduce the population and euthanasia rates, the shelter has several critical initiatives, one being the short-term fostering program. With short-term fostering, dogs (aka "transport dogs") are pre-selected for transport to rescue partners and placed into foster homes to wait for their transport dates. The time they spend in their foster home before transport is a transformative time as it allows them to decompress, remain healthy, and receive dedicated love and attention. That’s exactly how it worked with all our transport dogs Honey, Indie, Nala, and Jack.
